Dr Parijat De was appointed Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology in 2003. He is the Clinical Lead for Diabetes & Endocrinology and also leads the diabetes renal services in the Trust. He has set up the award winning nurse-led diabetic renal review clinics and is involved in research and projects involving a variety of disease areas in diabetes. He has also initiated various community based integrated diabetes clinics in Sandwell & West Birmingham CCG (amongst the first such in the country) which now forms part of the award winning DICE model of diabetes care delivery adopted throughout the CCG. He has been involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Parijat is an MRCP examiner, host and has been RCP College Tutor in the past. He has also been the trust Clinical Governance Lead in the past and has established local protocols and guidelines in most aspects of metabolic medicine including emergencies in diabetes as well as endocrinology.
Parijat is keen to improve the care of in-patients with diabetes, especially reduction in insulin errors and basic management of hypo and hyperglycemia within the hospital. Based on national diabetes auditsand local survey of in-patients, there is a clear lack of understanding of diabetes amongst nurses and junior doctors. He hopes to develop a robust system (involving IT service developments and improvements) that will provide education and support for everyone involved with diabetes in the hospital with the aim of upskilling & improving the standards of diabetes care thus helping reduce insulin incidents within the hospital.
