Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI): An Atypical Manifestation of Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome in a Child
Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (ODS) is a unique process of selective demyelination and destruction of oligodendrocytes and astrocytes in specific areas of the brain that usually occurs a few days after an osmotic stress. ODS has been described most frequently in association with a rapid correction of hyponatremia, though it may occur with other electrolyte or metabolic abnormalities.
Assessment of Visual Function for Education: A Commentary on ‘VEP Visual Acuity in Children with Cortical Visual Impairment’
Last year’s article In the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology [1] highlighted that Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is now the leading cause of visual impairment in the developed world [2]. It also provided a definition of CVI [3,4], and summarized its functional deficits, and methods of assessment.
Virtual Reality in Chronic Pain Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review
Approximately 19% of adults complain of chronic pain, which poses considerable physical, mental, and economic burdens. Conventional chronic pain management includes physical therapy, analgesic drugs, and the avoidance of pain triggers. Metaverse-related technologies such as virtual reality (VR) are promising complementary approaches. This review aimed to systematically analyse the applications of VR in chronic pain management in the context of rehabilitation.
Preclinical Protective Activity of Lutein on Diclofenac-induced Hepatotoxicity
Diclofenac (DF), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, may cause hepatotoxicity. Lutein (LT), a naturally occurring compound, has potential therapeutic activities. The protective activity of LT against DF-induced hepatotoxicity in adult Wistar rats was evaluated in this study.
