Dr. Mao currently is a John Swenson Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Pittsburgh and an elected fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. His research interests cover materials physics on the nano-scale. Dr. Mao is an internationally recognized leading researcher and educator in the area of nanomechanics, nanomaterials, and in-situ transmission electron microscope. To date, he has 200+ peer-reviewed journal publications including 23 Nature, Science, and Nature-series articles, receiving 15080+ total citations with an H-index of 63. He is among the world top 10 most cited researchers in nanomechanics according to Google Scholar and has been invited over one hundred times as keynote, plenary, or invited speakers in well-known international conferences/symposia including Materials Research Society (MRS), Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS) and Nature conferences. He was chair, organizer, or member of organizing committees for numerous international symposiums/conferences in MRS, TMS, and ASME. He was MIT post-doctor fellow in 1988 and visiting professor at Harvard University (1995), and has been awarded Esso Research Excellence Award, Leighton E. & Mary N. Orr Fellow (2000), William Kepler Whiteford Professor (2005), University Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award (2006) and John Swanson Endowed Professor (2019).
His research interests cover materials physics in nano-scale.
