Virtual Reality in Chronic Pain Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review
Approximately 19% of adults complain of chronic pain, which poses considerable physical, mental, and economic burdens. Conventional chronic pain management includes physical therapy, analgesic drugs, and the avoidance of pain triggers. Metaverse-related technologies such as virtual reality (VR) are promising complementary approaches. This review aimed to systematically analyse the applications of VR in chronic pain management in the context of rehabilitation.
Preclinical Protective Activity of Lutein on Diclofenac-induced Hepatotoxicity
Diclofenac (DF), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, may cause hepatotoxicity. Lutein (LT), a naturally occurring compound, has potential therapeutic activities. The protective activity of LT against DF-induced hepatotoxicity in adult Wistar rats was evaluated in this study.
How to Provide a Sufficient Supply of Safe, Effective and Quality-assured Blood and Blood Components in Emergency Situations
Background: Emergency situations can be personal and medical but also external and humanitarian (armed conflicts). In each situation a preparedness plan consisting of a risk assessment and gap analysis, emergency preparedness protocol, response and recovery protocol are needed. Objective: To discuss the question “how to provide a sufficient supply of safe, effective and quality blood and blood components in emergency situations?’”
Gabapentin for Ocular Surface Disorders: Bridging Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Innovation
This commentary critically evaluates Rusciano's (2024) comprehensive review on gabapentin (GBP) as a multifaceted therapy for ocular surface diseases, emphasizing its transition from systemic to topical applications. We highlight the review's synthesis of GBP's polypharmacology—spanning calcium channel modulation, anti-inflammatory effects, and neuroprotection—and its innovative integration with nanotechnology (e.g., nanoceria platforms) to overcome corneal delivery challenges while potentially reducing systemic side effects associated with oral administration.
Reduced Intensity Therapy for Primary Central Nervous System Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorders is Associated with Preserved Survival Outcomes: A Twenty-Year Single-Institutional Experience
Primary central nervous system post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PCNS-PTLD) are rare complications of transplantation. Due to PCNS-PTLD’s scarcity, optimal treatments, risk factors, and outcomes are poorly characterized. By retrospective analysis of 20 patients treated at the University of Wisconsin between the years 2000–2022, we aimed to describe patient/disease characteristics, therapies received, and survival outcomes of PCNS-PTLD. Three separate clinical and pathological databases were reviewed to identify cases, with all patients having at least 2 years of long-term follow-up.
